Is the God in the Old Testament a God of love?
by: Anonymous

Am I truly so naive. I belong to a God of love - the God of The Lord Jesus Christ. Jeremiah, like so many of the Old Testament prophets seems vengeful. Christ taught us to love our enemies, to do good to those who despise us. I see all of the troubles in the Middle East and hear the words of Jeremiah, which appear to be happening there. Not for the first time I've wondered if the God of the old testament and the God of the New testament are one and the same.
My greatest confusion came, when after forty years in the desert, the people of Israel had to fight for the land they had been led to, to kill the people there and take the land. This was the promised land?
I find my confusion embarrassing, what am I missing? Despite this confusion my faith has remained strong.

Dear Anonymous,

You do not sound naive at all. You sound like someone with a strong faith who asks genuine questions and no doubt receives answers which lead you forwards on your journey of faith.

I share your reservations about the Old Testament. Yet interestingly the words of Jeremiah often came to me when I pursued spirituality in the solitude of a life with severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
"I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts"
They helped me to know that, even though I couldn't attend workshops or go to church, God could reach me within the walls of a room. There are many words in the Old Testament that speak God’s love to me.
(You can read more about my experience with these words of Jeremiah’s here.

I believe we are children of the New Covenant or New Testament spoken of by Jeremiah and brought strongly into the world by Jesus. We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us receive the Bible not by the letter of the law but in the spirit of the law. It sounds to me like this is what you do.

God bless us and guide us,
Katherine

PS. You will perhaps be comforted to know that many writers have suggested that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament refer to different entities.

Thank you so much Katherine. I agree, not all of Jeremiah confuses me, only the vengeful stuff.

This world is so bent on vengeful activity it's difficult at times to stay strong in the teachings, although for sure they're written in my mind and on my heart, otherwise I'd probably react in the same way.

This world is not my home, I've seen it worsen over my lifetime but also seen the good ones shining ever more brightly. We are here to learn and that learning is ongoing.

Today I felt clearer on my long term confusion over the difference between The God of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the old testament God.

So pleased you told me that others have also noticed this. Now I know for sure why I always pray in Jesus name even though I know my God loves all the people and knows his own regardless of religion.

My cup runneth over - at times my confusion has made me an ungrateful child - although never weak in faith. Your reply today has been a great encouragement, thank you.
