Details of Our Lives

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives.”
Not a single, small thing misses His ever-searching eyes,
The alarm clock rings, it’s morning. I am late for work.
I have lost my keys; my boss is being a jerk.
I have made it to lunchtime, standing in the line.
I am waiting forever; will I make it back in time?
The afternoon drags by; I fiddle with my phone.
Finally, it’s 5 o’clock and time to go home.
Stopping at the store for milk and a loaf of bread,
I ask the Lord if He cares about these details or is it all in my head?
The scripture comes back to my mind so oddly,
“The Lord directs the steps of the godly
He delights in the details of their lives.”
It’s holding onto this Word all the day through,
Knowing in the ordinary details, He’s concerned for you.

An Inspirational Masterpiece

The DESIDERATA was around a lot in the early 1980s you could even hear it being read out on the radio.
I haven't seen or heard it for a long time, yet the message stuck.....I guess you could say that it was one of the first ways I had heard God's voice apart from the bible.
There of course have been hundreds of ways since.

Today I had an urge to share my favourite verse, plus the last two verses with your readers.

YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE,
NO LESS THAN THE TREES AND THE STARS;
YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE.
AND WHETHER OR NOT IT IS CLEAR TO YOU,
NO DOUBT THE UNIVERSE IS UNFOLDING AS IT SHOULD.

THEREFORE BE AT PEACE WITH GOD,
WHATEVER YOU CONCEIVE HIM TO BE,
AND WHATEVER YOUR LABOURS AND ASPIRATIONS
IN THE NOISY CONFUSION OF LIFE KEEP PEACE WITH YOUR SOUL.

WITH ALL ITS SHAM, DRUDGERY AND BROKEN DREAMS
IT IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL WORLD.
BE CHEERFUL
STAY HAPPY

The Desiderata came to light around 1927, it was written by Max Ehrmann. In 1944 Merill Moore (a US army psychiatrist) wrote to Max Ehrmann suggesting that the poem should be bottled and sold as 'DR EHRMANN'S MAGIC SOUL MEDICINE'. Don't you just love that.

God continues to choose who he speaks to us through, in the wonderful poetry many of us are priveledged to recieve from him and share with others on your amazing website Katherine.

Thank you Norma for your kind words and for the reminder of the Desiderata poem.
The words were first sent to me when I was bedbound. As well as being touched by the words themselves, I was touched that a friend had thought to send them.
It is a happy memory for me.

"YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE,
NO LESS THAN THE TREES AND THE STARS;"

This line makes me smile.
Often we think of ourselves as MORE of a child of the universe than the trees and the stars. By suggesting otherwise, the line challenges our sense of self importance. Yet it simultaneously raises our self worth, leaving us feeling valuable, not due to our differences and separatedness but as a valued part of the whole.


God is in everyone and everything so God is in me and you.

Holy words indeed.

The Impending Glory

Listen, listen with all soul attention.
Can you not hear the thunder
of the angelic procession?
the mighty harmonious cosmic symphony
of His progression
through the many spheres of stupendous light.

From sun to sun and star to star,
deep calling deep
does the awesome sound leap and sweep.

Nought shall bar His mighty force;
all the worlds evil shall not halt
nor restrain that appointed course.

The time has come for His light to shine
and for the ancient spirit of evil to decline.
Awake, yes indeed O man, awake for pity's sake.
Affairs are now truly soul size.

Omnipresence

Earth's crammed with heaven
and every common bush afire with God.
Every bird's song echoes His praise
and creative energy is the rhythm of the days.

The Soundless Sound

The world of nature is one
of countless forms geometric
behind whose forming is sound
and light energy electric.

Every falling snowflake,
ripples and eddies upon a lake,
shapes upon desert sands
the work of man's hands
in ancient sacred ruins.

All – the primordial sound reveal –
what was, what is, what is to be
to him with the inner hearing,
to her with eyes to see.

Love

Older than time itself,
without end or beginning,
it thrills and sings
through the very fabric of time.

It shines in the face of every morn
even as the birds sing of it with every dawn.
It forms the seed and the acorn,
the rose, the daffodil, and yes, the prickly thorn.

Love is its blessed name,
forever beautiful, sublime - forever the same.
