A quick line to say that I am just back from hearing David Hamilton speak at the UKCPD in my home town of Swindon, UK.
David writes about the mind body connection, about how our thoughts and health are connected. I was particularly interested to hear him speak as he is from a science background and can back up his remarks with the scientific research.
I listened to how statistically we are more likely to be healthy if we are compassionate and optimistic, and I thought of all those with ME/CFS and other chronic illnesses.
How
hard that is to hear when one is living every day in pain, allowing
one’s optimism to keep one hoping and relying on one’s compassion to
understand why friends and family may be unable to cope with the
situation.
David was quick to point out that there are of course many exceptions, and I spoke to him at the end on this issue.
He understood how it is unhelpful for some to hear those statistics. He says it is a dilemma, because he knows how much this stuff motivates many others to develop greater compassion and optimism.
David Hamilton is an excellent speaker and hugely likeable character. I related to so much of the research confirming mind body connections that I have experienced for myself.
I bought his book (see adverts on this page) and a CD.
If you want to know about the scientific research that shows just how powerfully our minds affect our health, then the book "How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body" is highly recommended.
The statistics on the placebo effect (opens window on another website) are extraordinary.
For all you out there with ME/CFS or other chronic illnesses who are demonstrating enormous compassion and optimism, please do not assume that those who speak of the mind body connection do not appreciate and value the work you do just to fight to get through the day.
Thank you for keeping your hearts open and your hope alive. You may not be seeing health in your life right now, but know that both these qualities are working for your good and the good of others.

Oh yes, and if you feel fed up and hopeless about being ill, that is OK too.
I did on many occasions, I also had depression. I still recovered dramatically. :-)

"One thing that struck me was the stripping of ego in the work. Most of us have a comfy ego façade, but weakness and disease tore Katherine’s away. The poems in Be Loved Beloved come from the heart."
