This page links to poems about illness and healing threaded throughout my author website. When you click through you can read the poem in the context of related ideas and sharings from my own journey.

The poems explore the human side of healing — the emotions, setbacks, small triumphs and quiet recognitions that arise when life becomes difficult.
They speak to chronic illness, learning, change, courage, and the tender work of going deep in the journey to find and celebrate my strengths at a time when I was so much more aware of my weakness.
Written during years of profound limitation, these poems trace the inner movements of coping, adapting, and discovering resilience.
These poems by myself, Katherine Owen, are not overtly spiritual, but I hope you’ll find they carry the same clarity, compassion and honesty found in my spiritual writing, offering insight into how we grow through hardship and how meaning can emerge from struggle.
I will be blessed if you find in my poetry one who – in honouring my own experience– also honours yours and accompanies you gently through the challenges of living with chronic illness.

Since 1993 I have been diagnosed with the illness Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
Two years after the diagnosis, I started receiving poems in my head. I had little speech, little company, and my poems became my main source of guidance and validation. On many occasions, I have read my words and grieved the difficulty of my situation, and felt the relief that someone understands. Yes, the person is myself, but on the page my words make sense and ring true. My words count.
After 14 years bedbound I experienced a dramatic improvement in health. I continue to live with ME/CFS. But no longer bedbound, no longer using a commode, no longer needing to be fed. Phew!
Some of mine are very short poems. I am happy for them to be called thought-bites, or ‘inspirations’.
My non spiritual poems can be on many subjects, for example poems about illness and healing, poems exploring the patterns of the mind, poems navigating the challenges of relationships, poems on the challenges of receiving help or not having enough help.
I am not sure all of those are covered on this page, but I may add more poems over time.

These poems relate to the stages of grief of illness. When you click through you will find that I offer a free ebook on that subject via my other website on ME/CFS and healing.
When your body stops you before your mind does. Familiar to many who live with ME/CFS!
Facing the sadness that comes with accepting you are ill

The temptation to choose quick relief when deeper healing feels too effortful
Letting the power of belief itself become part of your healing

The surprise of discovering I stayed sane even when life felt unbearable... for so long.

"One thing that struck me was the stripping of ego in the work. Most of us have a comfy ego façade, but weakness and disease tore Katherine’s away. The poems in Be Loved Beloved come from the heart."
Dana Taylor, Author of Ever-Flowing Streams: Tapping into Healing Energy
Through the years living with ME/CFS I have always hoped for health stability or health improvements.
As I said above, I did experience a health improvement back in 2008. My health and quality of life then kept improving for some years until circumstances once more blocked my ability to pace activity.
However, although I haven't always improved in health, since the early days of illness I have consistently had a sense of learning - spiritually, emotionally and mentally.
My poetry explores what enables myself and others to learn to learn.
Skills of learning become all the more important when we are learning what we do not want to learn, such as how to cope with illness, how to ask for help, how to say no to those who push us to do too much.
Though not directly poems about illness and healing, the poems that follow are very much part of my journey of living with illness and experiencing healing on many levels.
As one who lives with illness, I only read about illness to get advice or validation. Otherwise, I am grateful to read from others and myself about how to learn and grow REGARDLESS of my level of health.
I hope you enjoy these poems about learning and change.

Being open to the excitement of learning after life's challenges had squashed enthusiasm
Why Should I Be The One To Change?
Changing because you’re the one who can — and because it hurts less than not changing.
Recognising that trying hard is not enough. This poem, written in a time of illness and healing, alludes to finding a solution beyond yourself - a spiritual solution.
Choosing to put effort into becoming instead of pretending. This is another poem which quietly implies the need to reach out beyond your own current learnings.
Playing with turning “I can’t” into “I can” and choosing to recognise it as true.
Seeing your willingness to learn as enough.
The triumph of moving towards a goal slowly, steadily, and in your own time.
